Indexation

The process of search engines storing and organizing web content for retrieval in search results.

Indexation is the process by which search engines store, organize, and make web content available for retrieval in search results. Being indexed is prerequisite for appearing in search.

The indexation process: 1. Crawler discovers your page 2. Content is rendered and analyzed 3. Page is added to search engine's index 4. Page becomes eligible to appear in results

Indexation status types:

  • Indexed: Page is in the index
  • Not indexed: Page was found but not indexed
  • Excluded: Page was intentionally excluded
  • Unknown: Page not yet discovered

Indexation and AI visibility:

  • Indexed pages are more likely to be in AI training data
  • AI crawlers may use similar discovery methods
  • Well-indexed sites tend to have better AI visibility
  • Index coverage indicates technical health

Improving indexation:

  • Submit XML sitemap to Search Console
  • Fix technical issues blocking indexation
  • Ensure content quality meets standards
  • Build internal links to important pages

Monitoring indexation status helps ensure your content is discoverable by both search engines and AI systems.
